Effective leaders work hard to learn the names of all employees in their organization. Effective leaders address people by their name. True leaders derive joy from learning the names of people, as it will allow new opportunities to get to know, form partnerships with, and learn from others.
Learn both the first and last name and be judicious about which name you use. Most people appreciate knowing that you remember their name. An excuse used too often by some leaders is that they are "not good with names." This is a lame and pathetic excuse and takes attention away from the importance of that first step to get to know and respect each and every member of the organization.
Sometimes, people volunteer information about their loved ones. When this information is offered voluntarily, make an attempt to remember the names of their loved ones too. Frequently ask about how their loved ones are doing.
