Four categories of co-workers and direct reports: (1) Partner, (2) Oblivious, (3) Sycophant, and (4) Saboteur.
Broadly speaking, there are four categories of co-workers and direct reports: (1) Partner, (2) Oblivious, (3) Sycophant, and (4) Saboteur.
Partner. Partners are those who work with you productively. These individuals are genuinely interested in doing good work in pursuit of advancing the mission and priorities of the organization. These individuals are generally great partners and make work delightful.
Oblivious. These individuals have no clue what you do and don't care to know either. They are oblivious to the potential and synergy that can be unlocked if they work in partnership with you and others. This is a true missed opportunity for the organization. With a little help, motivation, and guidance, these individuals can be encouraged to become good partners.
Sycophant. These individuals think that their only path to fame and glory is to kiss your ass. Their spoken words and actions often lead to their own embarrassment and may even give the broader impression that you encourage such behavior. Gently coach these individuals to engage in effective, meaningful, and productive partnerships.
Saboteur. These individuals think that their only path to fame and glory is to sabotage you and/or compete with you. These individuals are generally very hard to work with. It is often not clear what drives this group. Be careful with this group, but always gently guide them to adopt a collaborative approach to resolving issues.
Every leader's goal should be to move as many individual as possible to the partner category.
