Leadership / Management Tip
Have absolute control over your temper, impulses, and emotions.

Successful leaders recognize that they must carefully control their temper, impulses, reflexes, urges, emotions, and unbaked thoughts. Thoughtful leaders carefully filter their written and spoken words, facial and bodily gestures, as well as actions through a carefully designed system of personal, organizational, cultural, and societal principles and values. This system must be informed by personal ethical and moral principles and values; organizational vision, mission, and values; and cultural and societal norms and values. Most leaders who get themselves in trouble in one way or another do so because they act impulsively without properly filtering their emotions, thoughts, and actions through their own system of principles and values. Learn to control your temper, impulses, and emotions. Identify your triggers, engage in scenario planning, and practice frequently to be ready to respond appropriately to all situations. Sooner or later, you will be in a tough situation, and prior methodical practice with your system of principles and values will make the difference between successfully navigating the difficult situation or inflicting irreparable damage to personal and organizational brand and reputation.
