An engaged leader makes tens of decisions every day. Some are routine and easy. Others are difficult and require thought, introspection, examination of data and evidence, input from others, and courage. As a leader, it is essential to make decisions that withstand the test of time. Routine questions every leader should ask herself/himself are:
Will this decision withstand the test of time?
Will this decision still be acceptable long after I am out of this role?
How will my successors view this decision?
How will future generations of the organization's employees view this decision?
How will future clients of the organization view this decision?
While it is difficult to know the answers to the above questions with a high level of certainty, it is important to increase the odd that every decision made will remain relevant for a long time to come. For the benefit of the organization, its employees, its clients, and the leader's own legacy, it is incumbent upon every leader to make enduring decisions, ensuring that every decision is made with the best interests of all constituents in mind.
